Crews have secured the oil well that leaked crude into a canal south of Des Allemands, but cleanup and environmental monitoring were still needed, according to an October 30 statement released by Lafourche Parish Government.

The spill reached an unnamed oilfield canal off Bayou Des Allemands. No injuries had been reported when officials announced the well was secured.

Crews installed initial well control measures October 28 and added a second measure October 30 as a precaution. The response team said work to assess affected areas and recover oil would continue.

An earlier official update said the cause remained under investigation. The October 30 statement did not announce a cause or give a date for completing the cleanup.

Officials also said routine incident announcements would end, with further information released if significant developments occur.
